Dadbot is a personal hobby website. It carries no advertising, affiliate links or sponsored posts. Readers can optionally support the site through the Buy Me a Coffee link.

Privacy

Mark Hickinson, at the address above, is responsible for Dadbot’s handling of personal data. This notice explains the site’s current behaviour. No analytics does not mean that no personal data is processed: hosting, optional features and email correspondence involve data handling.

Hosting and page requests

Dadbot.blog is hosted on GitHub Pages. Visiting a page sends your IP address and technical request information to the hosting infrastructure so it can deliver the website. GitHub states that it logs visitors’ IP addresses for security purposes. Dadbot does not receive those access logs or use them for visitor analytics.

GitHub is a US company, so this information is processed in the United States; how GitHub handles it is described in its own published policies. Dadbot does not set an expiry period for those logs and does not receive a copy.

Analytics, advertising and cookies

Dadbot runs no analytics or usage statistics, advertising trackers, visitor profiles or cross-site tracking tools. Dadbot’s own code does not set cookies. It does use browser local storage for the features described below. Cookies and local storage are different technologies; the absence of cookies does not by itself mean that no data is processed or that consent is never needed.

Dadbot does not sell or rent personal data. The third-party connections described here still disclose information to the receiving services.

Weather and automatic location lookup

The weather ticker starts automatically on pages where it appears. If there is no usable saved location, your browser contacts ipapi.co, which receives your IP address and returns an approximate city and coordinates. This can happen on a first visit, after clearing storage, or when an automatically detected location becomes stale. It does not request your device’s GPS location.

Your browser sends the location coordinates to api.open-meteo.com for a forecast. When you type a place name, the search feature sends that text to geocoding-api.open-meteo.com to find matching places. Those services also receive the IP address and technical information associated with the connection.

Selecting a place saves it for later weather requests. This avoids future automatic lookups while the saved choice remains usable, but does not undo a request already made on page load. These requests go directly from your browser to the services, not to a Dadbot-operated backend.

ipapi.co is operated by a US company; Open-Meteo is operated from Switzerland. Their own published policies describe how they handle information: ipapi privacy policy and Open-Meteo terms and privacy.

Radio directory and streams

Opening the Radio desk requests directory information from de1.api.radio-browser.info. The directory receives your IP address and the requested search or filter information. Country and language lists may be reused from browser storage.

Choosing a station to play connects your browser directly to that station’s streaming infrastructure. The stream operator receives your IP address and technical connection information. Dadbot does not record listening duration or station choices in an analytics system. Stream providers differ by station and have their own data-handling practices.

What is stored in your browser

Local storage is kept in your browser, not in a Dadbot database. Some stored values are used in external requests: in particular, saved weather coordinates are sent to Open-Meteo when a forecast is needed.

Weather location

Stores the place name, coordinates, related location details and timestamp. Automatically detected locations are reused for up to 24 hours. A manually selected location has no automatic expiry.

Weather forecast

Stores the forecast, associated location and timestamp. Reused for up to 30 minutes.

Storage key: dadbot_weather_forecast_v2.

Radio lists

Stores country and language lists and their timestamps. Reused for up to 24 hours. These are not listening histories or saved station lists.

Storage keys: dadbot_radio_countries_v1 and dadbot_radio_languages_v1.

These are cache freshness limits, not promises of automatic deletion. Stale entries can remain on your device until overwritten or cleared. You can remove them through your browser’s settings for Dadbot site data. This also resets saved choices. If you revisit, the features may create new entries and the weather lookup may run again.

Email enquiries

If you email the contact address, Mark receives your email address, message, any name you supply and any attachments. They are used to read and respond to your enquiry or handle a legal or data-protection request. Please include only information needed for that purpose.

The mailbox uses Gmail, so Google processes the correspondence as the email provider. Emails are handled manually, not sent to a Hermes email-reading or summarising workflow. Mark’s intended practice is to delete messages after the enquiry has been dealt with, unless retaining them is necessary to meet a legal obligation or handle a dispute. Deletion from the mailbox does not necessarily remove trash or provider backup copies immediately.

The Buy Me a Coffee button is a link to buymeacoffee.com, not an embedded payment widget. Dadbot’s button does not contact that service until you follow the link. If you make a payment or send a support message, the service handles the transaction and may provide information about that support to Mark. Do not treat a contribution as anonymous unless the service explicitly confirms it.

Other external links take you to separate websites. Their operators are responsible for their own practices. Provider policies should be checked before submitting information or making payments.

The purposes are to deliver and secure the website, provide weather and radio functions, remember feature choices, and handle correspondence. Delivering and securing the site and dealing with ordinary enquiries are assessed on the basis of legitimate interests under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR; responding to requests where the law requires it may rely on Article 6(1)(c). These bases must be applied to the actual circumstances, not assumed to cover every optional feature.

Weather and radio requests are made directly by your browser when you use those features, and this notice describes them so you can decide whether to use them.

Some providers, including the hosting service and the IP-location lookup, process information in the United States. That means information may be transferred outside Germany and the European Economic Area. Each provider’s own published policies describe the safeguards they apply; Dadbot does not control those arrangements.

Your data-protection rights

Depending on the circumstances and applicable conditions, you can request access to your personal data, correction, erasure, restriction of processing and data portability. You can object to processing based on legitimate interests. Where processing relies on consent, you can withdraw it without affecting the lawfulness of processing before withdrawal.

Contact Mark using the email above. You do not need to create an account. Information needed to handle a request depends on the request; please do not send identification documents unless they are genuinely necessary and requested.

You also have the right to complain to a supervisory authority, including in the EU country where you usually live, work or believe an infringement occurred. For Baden-Württemberg, the authority is the Landesbeauftragte für den Datenschutz und die Informationsfreiheit Baden-Württemberg (LfDI BW): complaint information and contact routes. You do not have to contact Dadbot first.

Dadbot does not use automated decisions producing legal or similarly significant effects about visitors. There is no requirement to email or make a contribution to read the website; network request data is needed to deliver pages, and external feature requests are needed to obtain their results.
